I bought the Kindle version of this book, so maybe the hard version is different. But is the worst edited book I have ever read, it's like no one did even rudimentary proofreading. There are typos,so many instances where the author either contradicts himself or completely repeats himself almost verbatim within the space of a couple of paragraphs..A wildly confusing and actually amusing section is the chapter describing Billy Wilkerson's building the Flamingo. I finally gave up trying to understand that author's math as he described how that Wilkerson had sunk $300,000 into the project but the cost of the construction had "... ballooned to just under $1.2 million.. a $400,000 shortfall" ..huh? Also...chapter heading page 8 "Inspiration to Build the Flaming"...(flamingo?)...
In the chapter on Bugsy Siegal "...A year later, Seigel and Lansky began building ties to Charles Luciano and Frank Costello, future bosses of the Genovese crime family. Seigal and Lansky also became aligned with Frank Costello, future boss of the Genovese crime family,.." (this kind of duplication is all throughout the book, very frustrating.
on page 64: "... the character Moe Greene--based on Siegel--who was killed in this manner in [the movie] The Godfather.
then on page 68 (about Gus Greenbaum and Moe Sedway): "In the film The Godfather, Greenbaum's name is blended with Moe Sedway's for the fictional character "Moe Greene".
As I said.. maybe this is just the Kindle.. but it's like an early draft of the manuscript got out by accident...

The Las Vegas Chronicles The Inside Story of Sin City Celebrities Special Players and Fascinating Casino Owners eBook Andrew J McLean Reviews
Really interesting! If you are a fan of Vegas, you will find some unique stories, and a different point of view take from the author. Both my wife and I enjoyed this book (which we read on our way to LV!)
Gift, she liked it very much
A good history of Las Vegas with some interesting details about the inner workings of the casinos.
Problem is the author gets caught up on in some minutiae that the reader(this reader)doesn't really care about. In all I guess the book is informative and has some merit to it.
Fascinating read about many aspects of Vegas but, as other reviewers have noted, in serious, SERIOUS need of an editor... tightening, proofreading and deleting repetitions would make this a 5-star read, rather than its current 3-star rating.
Great plane reading for those interested in the history of the city and Nevada gaming. Lots of useless but fun facts....
The book is interesting and quick and easy to read. Unfortunately it is somewhat dated now, and an updated edition should be published to include recent developments and trends.
Very well researched and written. I lived in LV as a child. My Mother was a waitress by day and showgirl by night. My stepfather was a craps dealer. McLean writes about Vegas and its history as only an insider could. I very much enjoyed his book. It's refreshing to read such an accurate account of a place as unique as Vegas. Very well done!
